DISCOVERY EYE FOUNDATION LEADS THE WAY
TO FIGHT DEBILITATING EYE DISEASES

Imagine being unable to see your loved ones, watch a beautiful sunset, or read your favorite books and magazines. Vision loss and eye disease impact all of us.

The Discovery Eye Foundation, a national foundation that was founded in 1970 by Rita and Morris S Pynoos, plays a vital role in finding the causes of and cures for eye disease while helping individuals with vision loss and their families find new way to see the world.

Discovery Eye Foundation The Discovery Eye Foundation is working to combat blindness and eye disease while serving the needs of those with impaired vision and total vision loss through corneal and retinal research at the Morris S. Pynoos Laboratories at the University of California, Irvine, and through patient advocacy and education.

The mission of The Discovery Eye Foundation is to facilitate the development of cures and improve patient care through retinal and corneal research and educational programs for those persons with eye disease. They do this by supporting cutting edge eye research and providing educational programs around the world. Sheryl Alexander, Vice President of Development at the foundation, says, “For almost forty years Discovery Eye Foundation has been diligently working to find treatments and cures for debilitating eye diseases. Through the years we have supported thousands of patients and their families while helping them understand these diseases, resulting in a better quality of life.“

Discovery Eye FoundationThe statistics are overwhelming. The Alliance for Aging Research and National Alliance For Eye and Vision Research stated in a September 2007 report:

  • 38 million Americans suffer from blindness, low vision, or an age-related eye disease. That number is expected to grow to around 50 million by 2020.
  • Every year, 200,000 Americans develop advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – one every three minutes.
  • 6.5 million Americans over the age of 65 have severe visual impairment that threatens to limit their mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Discovery Eye Foundation is also the home of National Keratoconus Foundation and the Macular Degeneration Partnership, two amazing programs that help fight eye disease. NKCF promotes awareness of Keratoconus and develops education and outreach programs for patients and their families. MDP provides patients and their families with education and support through newsletters, website, support groups and education forums about this leading cause of severe vision loss in people over the age of 60. Both programs also actively support researchers in their work to find the causes and a cure for the conditions.

Eye research is conspicuously under-funded in the United States. It is for this reason that the community as a whole must partner together to address this growing issue. Discovery Eye Foundation is working to continue eye research and patient education programs.

New Santa Fe Area Comes to Life this Spring

Santa FeSpring in Santa Fe promises to be green and lush after plentiful snowfall over the winter. Following the first flush of annual color will come the blooming of the Santa Fe Railyard, http://www.sfrailyardcc.org, an exciting development adjacent to the Santa Fe Southern rail line in the Guadalupe Street area.

The Guadalupe Historic District has been anchored for years by the refurbished railroad warehouses of the Sanbusco Market Center, Santuario de Guadalupe, the city’s most contemporary museum SITE Santa Fe, and the many shops, galleries, and restaurants along and just off of Guadalupe. As the Santa Fe Railyard project takes shape in earnest this spring, a whole new dimension will be added to this already lively part of the city.

Highlights of the Railyard include 13 acres of open space including a performance area, plaza, and pedestrian promenade, live-work studio space, a new retail complex and theater center, and a permanent home for the popular Santa Fe Farmers Market, http://www.santafefarmersmarket.com, scheduled for completion this spring. New restaurants, galleries, and stores have already moved into the Railyard area. The project will be a green development with water-wise landscaping and multiple water catchments for storing precipitation.

Santa FeIn addition, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, http://www.nmrailrunner.com, train will depart from the old Santa Fe train station, located in the Railyard, during multiple runs per day between Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and towns farther south. The train will connect Santa Fe with Sandoval County locations, various stops in Albuquerque including near the Albuquerque Airport, and the towns of Los Lunas and Belen. Service is expected to begin in late 2008.

Among other pending developments in Santa Fe is the opening of the new state-of-the-art Santa Fe Convention Center downtown this summer. The new facility will offer groups meeting in Santa Fe a highly flexible, modern venue as well as providing gallery space for local artists and be the new home of the Santa Fe Convention & Visitors Bureau. Visitors will find the bureau’s outstanding information specialists and a new information center at the new building, located at the corner of Grant and Marcy, starting in late July.
