Call for Volunteers: Clean-up partnership recognizes the
historical significance of the Santa Fe River

Santa Fe, NM, May 29, 2009 – The Santa Fe Watershed Association and Santa Fe 400th Anniversary, Inc. will join together to honor the Santa Fe River by partnering on the All River Cleanup. The clean-up partnership recognizes the historical significance of the Santa Fe River and will take place on Saturday, May 30th beginning at 10:00 A.M. The project is in conjunction with National River Cleanup, a series of community-based river cleanings happening throughout the country sponsored by American Rivers, a national non-profit conservation organization. Libby Dover, Executive Director of Santa Fe 400th states: “The Santa Fe River helped make the settlement of Santa Fe possible 400 years ago. It is only fitting that we partner with the Santa Fe Watershed Association and honor the Santa Fe River by tending to the heart of our community”.

Volunteers from the Santa Fe Watershed Association and Santa Fe 400th Anniversary, Inc. will join with tens of thousands of volunteers across the country who will participate in National River Cleanup. Santa Fe Watershed Association Executive Director, David Groenfeldt states: “A clean river is a healthy river. The National River Cleanup event helps to raise public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulation in our nation’s rivers”. Dover adds: “Organizing a river cleanup is a good way to reconnect family, friends and neighbors with the river in our own backyard, and keeping the Santa Fe River clean is one way that we all can show our care and concern for the River, which for the past 400 years has been the heart of the oldest Capital City in the United States”.

Volunteers are invited to join the cleanup by showing up at Alto Park, located at 1043 Alto Street, on Saturday, May 30th, any time between 10:00 am and noon.  Volunteers will be given trash bags, gloves and assigned to various stretches of the River. The goal is to have enough volunteers so that the entire Santa Fe River, from the Santa Fe River Preserve to Highway 599 is cleaned.

The May 30th All River Cleanup is being conducted in preparation for the River Festival and Fishing Derby which will take place the following Saturday, June 6th.

Hotelier Tehmina Adaya:
Recreating the Boutique Hotel with Hotel Shangri-La

Los Angeles, CA, May 26, 2009 – Tehmina Adaya, owner and hotelier of Santa Monica’s architectural gem and historic landmark Hotel Shangri-La, has recreated the concept of the boutique hotel. The hotelier took control of the property from her late father, and quickly embarked on a renovation that would embrace the dichotomies of the 21st century.

The concept behind the renovation evolved out of a vision that Adaya began creating while growing up in the hotel, which her family took over in 1983. Adaya’s unparalleled knowledge of the hotel business and its in-depth understanding of the hotel’s unique history, continuous celebrity appeal and appreciation for art-deco architecture, allowed her to re-introduce a new type of boutique hotel; one with preserved historic integrity with the modern amenities to make it Western Los Angeles’ premier destination.

The first step in restoring this landmark hotel was to perform extensive research on both lifestyle and architecture. Realizing that Hotel Shangri-La had once been a hideaway for such celebrities and dignitaries as Madonna, Sean Penn, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Bill Clinton, she made it her mandate to bring this allure back to the Santa Monica area.

In addition, Adaya emphasized the importance of making the hotel eco-friendly, which she showcases through such amenities as reduced energy fixtures, appliances and toiletries, as well as with the California Farm Fresh Cuisine and wine list featured in the various food and beverage outlets.

The full-service hotel, which will be having its Grand Opening in June of 2009, now features 71 rooms & suites (an increase of 17 keys), lush courtyard with elevated pool and cabanas, intimate social dining, lavish suites, and posh rooftop bar. The new renovations also allow for full food and beverage, a 24-hour concierge, restaurant, sidewalk café, rooftop bar & lounge, elevated pool with cabanas, and outdoor exercise and yoga deck.
