Santa Fe CVB and Businesses Brings
A Taste of Santa Fe to Los Angeles

Los Angeles, October 27, 2009 – The Santa Fe Convention & Visitors Bureau and a coalition of city businesses are bringing a Taste of Santa Fe to the Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica on Wednesday, October 28 from 3 to 8 PM. Art, music, theater, dance, food, and more are planned to promote travel to Santa Fe, to raise awareness about the city’s 400th Anniversary, to encourage more meetings to be held in the city, and to mark the beginning of direct air service between LAX and Santa Fe on American Eagle in mid-November.

See the official invitation to Taste of Santa Fe in Los Angeles.

The bureau brought together the city’s public and private sectors for the event. The Downtown Merchants Association, Santa Fe Gallery Association, Santa Fe Arts Commission, Santa Fe Lodgers, New Mexico Department of Tourism, Heidi Lowen Porcelain, Theater Grottesco, Juan Sidi Flamenco Theater Company, American Eagle, Downtown Day Spa, Santa Fe School of Cooking, Ski Santa Fe, Santa Fean Magazine, Town of Taos and the Taos Ski Valley, Native American musician Robert Mirabal, and the film and television technicians of New Mexico union IATSE Local 480 have all been involved in the planning and will be represented at the event.

The city will present itself and the region through art and artists demonstrations, food and cooking presentations, dance and theater performances, spa treatments, merchants showing goods and fashions, hotel and meeting presentations, and a film showcase. More than a thousand members of the Los Angeles area press, meeting planners, tour operators, travel agents, and members of the film industry have been invited to the 5-hour, experiential open house event.

“Los Angeles is one of Santa Fe’s most important leisure travel markets in addition to being a national media market and film center,” said Santa Fe CVB Executive Director Keith Toler. “By providing hands-on Santa Fe experiences we think the LA media and the city’s travel and film professionals will come away with a better idea of what Santa Fe has to offer and, in turn, result in more visitors, meetings, and films coming to the city. This has been an excellent collaboration between public agencies and Santa Fe’s various business groups and is a model for working together in the future, especially our partnership with IATSE 480.”

Thirty-six participants from Santa Fe will be going to Santa Monica plus a truck donated by IATSE 480 filled with supplies. Santa Fe photographer Louis Laray will be photographing and videotaping the event for a round up release to be sent to the invitees and to post on the santafe.org website. Media RSVP’s so far include Time, People, Elite Traveler, Los Angeles Magazine, Association News, Modern Luxury, Art Ltd. Magazine, New Mexico Journey, LA Trends Magazine, TravelAge West Magazine, LA Family, E! Entertainment Television, Hollywood Foreign Press, CBS, ABC, and Creators News Syndicate among many others.

Guinness World Record

On Tuesday, October 27th, Downtown Santa Monica and
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Attempt to Set Guinness World Record For The Tallest Ice Sculpture Ever Constructed

October 26, 2009, Downtown Santa Monica, CA — Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Downtown Santa Monica will set the Guinness World Record for the tallest ice sculpture in the world at the opening of the ice skating rink, ICE at Santa Monica, on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 4:00pm. In the likeness of Ice Age’s Scrat character, this historical event coincides with the DVD and Blu-ray disc release of Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The community and press are invited to witness the unveiling and adjudication by the Guinness World Records™.

The Scrat ice sculpture will stand at 45 feet tall, using 133,000 lbs of ice from across four states. The model was created by artists from Blue Sky Studios, and a team of 14 skilled sculptors from ICE Bulb LLC have been constructing the sculpture at ICE at Santa Monica since Friday, October 23, 2009.

.

According to Marc Entin, Owner of Ice Bulb LLC, “What makes this 100% free standing ice sculpture so unique is that it is happening in a warm weather climate.” A project like this would normally take more than four days, but because of the 80-degree plus weather in Downtown Santa Monica, time is a big factor. The team in place has been working nights so that they do not have to worry about the ice being exposed to the warm weather elements.

An array of activities will take place on Tuesday evening in celebration of this historical moment.

  • Food, hot cocoa, and goody bags for kids in attendance will be handed out
  • Select scenes from Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs will be screened for all to enjoy
  • World figure skating champion, Randy Gardner, and members of California Gold, a synchronizing team, are set to perform to the “Walk the Dinosaur” song featured in the film
  • The one and only acorn-loving Scrat will demonstrate his own skating abilities
  • A Guinness World Records™ adjudicator will be present to oversee the unveiling and world record attempt
  • The 8,000 square foot outdoor ice rink will open to the public for free

After Tuesday’s event, ICE at Santa Monica will remain open daily through January 31, 2010, and admission is $10 and includes rental skates. For hours and more information, please go to http://www.downtownsm.com/about/winterlit.html
