Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi Dispels the Myths about Vitamin D in his New Book "Power of Vitamin D"
Why we cannot drink enough milk to get the Vitamin D we need
“Diet is not a major source of vitamin D,” according Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi, Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and Director of the Jamila Diabetes and Endocrine Medical Center in Southern California. Dr. Zaidi is the author of a new book titled, “Power of Vitamin D,” which provides the real facts and benefits of vitamin D.
In order to get enough vitamin D one would have to drink at least 20 cups, or more of milk a day. “It’s a common misconception that one or two cups of milk a day will provide you with enough vitamin D. I have patients that say, but I drink milk every day. I tell them, okay, let’s get your vitamin D level checked. Sure enough, they turn out to be deficient in vitamin D.”
Even oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and blue fish contain only small amounts of vitamin D. The amount of vitamin D in fish remains unchanged if it is baked, but decreases about 50% if fish is fried. Also, farm raised salmon has only about 25% of vitamin D compared to wild salmon.“While fish is good for your overall health, you’d have to eat a lot of fish in order to get enough vitamin D. And that is not only impractical but would also increase your risk for mercury poisoning” says Dr. Zaidi.
“These misconceptions are one of the reasons why we are facing an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency” explains Dr. Zaidi. “The most scientific way to find out if you are low in vitamin D is by taking a simple blood test. It factors in all of the variables that determine your vitamin D status such as your eating habits, amount of sun exposure, geographic location, race, age, medications.”
Vitamin D plays a vital role in the health of our muscles and bones to our immune system, and almost every organ system in the body. While Vitamin D has been a hot topic in the media lately, it is important to note that this hormone (yes, it’s actually a hormone, not a vitamin!) is not a cure. There are a lot of books and articles that may be causing confusion about this topic. “Bottom line, vitamin D should be taken as a form of prevention and treatment, not a cure for cancer or diabetes. It’s important that people understand this and take the appropriate dose of vitamin D supplement for the prevention as well as treatment of a host of medical illnesses,” says Dr. Zaidi.

June 2010 Review in Amazon and Reader Views:
Personally speaking, I've seen how vitamin D can affect health because someone I know suffered from various aches, pains, and a lack of energy until a doctor was finally found who tested vitamin D levels. The ailments completely disappeared when the vitamin D level was raised.
The "Power of Vitamin D" lives up to its name by providing people with the information they need to become partners with their doctors in managing their own healthcare.

Midwest Book Review, May, 2010
If you read any of my reviews you know that I am always interested in books that may help our health, so I was happy to review this work on vitamin D. Dr. Zaidi certainly knows what he is talking about, that is evident from the beginning of the book to the end. I was very surprised to learn of all the reasons we need the correct amount of Vitamin D, and all that is does within our bodies. There are so many problems that happen without the proper amount of this vitamin. It will amaze you.
This book does not read as a medical journal, but is written in a way that is easily understandable by simple people like myself. It is broken down into topics that are easily accessed. He gives patient studies, scientific studies, and much more. The information is vast and can be referred to whenever needed at the flip of a page. I truly feel this is a must-have book, one where you can take your time, slowly read over the information and use it to better your health in so many areas. Very well done, and highly recommended.

FengShui Book Reviews, April, 2010
Even though I enjoy healthy living and advice books; it has been my experience that medical journals and books in general are quite dry.
But, to my surprise, I found the Power of Vitamin D quite the opposite, it includes stories that were engaging; with supporting case studies throughout. In fact, at times, it was hard to put down. Dr. Zaidi provides facts that I could readily apply to my life.
Being an athlete myself, with a portfolio of races, 1 half ironman, 49 half marathons and 6 marathons, it is important that I eat healthy and am good to my body as I grow older. Sarfraz Zaidi provided a plethora of valuable advice that I could immediately apply to my daily life.
This book is rich with advice about the harmful effects of low vitamin D levels. It also provides historical evidence to back the need for Vitamin D and where you can find Vitamin D sources to incorporate in your diet. There's even a nice conversion table in the back to help with portion conversion.
This well-written, easy to read and a well-informed guide that I would recommend to my health conscious colleagues, marathon friends, and acquaintances to better understand the importance of Vitamin D in their bodies.

Outstanding reviews:
I love this book! It's knowledgeable yet written in a way that even the most rudimentary of readers will be able to understand. There are case studies included. Basically, it just makes sense. After reading the history of Vitamin D and learning what it actually is, how we obtain it and the uses it has in our body, I have to admit that I'm hooked. Even if you aren't a health nut this book has something for you. The information contained within is actually interesting. The boring book I was expecting just wasn't here. It didn't take me much time at all to breeze right through this book. Surprisingly, I found it more difficult to put down than several of the fiction books I've read lately. I have to admit, I'm a fiction junkie. However, if all nonfiction books were this interesting, I'd definitely read alot more of them.
